Over the past three decades, the Hungerford Award has launched the careers of a number of West Australian authors, including Holden Sheppard, Natasha Lester, Alice Nelson, Maria Papas and many more.
The Hungerford Award is WA's most prestigious award for an unpublished manuscript, with a cash prize of $15,000 from the City of Fremantle and a publishing contract with Fremantle Press.
Maria Papas won the 2020 Hungerford Award for her manuscript, Skimming Stones, which explores the impact of childhood illness on siblings and other family members. In the above episode of Writers off the Page, Maria chats about her book and how winning the Hungerford changed her life.
